Texas Attorney General said, “Whether it’s a sex crime against a child or a financial crime against a consumer, cyber crime does real damage to real people.” “Working with Texans for Economic Progress and the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, the Office of the Attorney General is helping Texans not only understand the good that can be done through the Internet, but also be wary of its dangers for children and consumers.” said General Abbott.

Also speaking was Marseli Hancock, the President of iKeepSafe.org an online safety organization based in Washington, D.C. As technology evolves, online safety and security continue to be a priority for TEP as we continue to educate families, consumers and business-owners.

TEP headed to the west Texas panhandle for more Power of Connectivity events in Lubbock and Amarillo with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. At both events, General Abbott discussed the dangers for kids lurking in today’s online culture and what Texas is doing to help protect kids and their families online. His Cyber Crimes Unit has arrested nearly 100 men who solicited sex online from people they believed to be children. “The neighborhood where (children) spend most of their time is going to be the neighborhood of cyberspace,” Abbott said. “The people that have recognized this the most and the fastest are the people who intend to harm others on the Internet.”

CEO and founder of the Family Online Safety Institute, Stephen Balkam discussed cyber threats, from cyber-bullying to the dangers of explicit photographs on Facebook. In Amarillo, Marsali Hancock, president of the Internet Safety Coalition (iKeepSafe), addressed online safety and security for families, consumers and business-owners. “Parents and children need to understand that what happens to them online today, will stay with them for the rest of their lives-positive or negative,” she said.

News coverage appeared statewide from the Amarillo Globe News, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas Tech Student Newspaper – Daily Toreador, KFYO News Radio, KAMC TV (ABC), KCBD TV and FOX TV. Links to all coverage are below as well as the FOX interview with Stephen Balkam.
